Tooth Extractions

A tooth extraction is rarely the first-choice option when it comes to dealing with a patient’s problems. Sometimes, however, they are the only option that remains to help relieve a patients pains or to fix issues of extreme overcrowding. Like every option in the dental industry, the decision to extract a tooth comes down to what’s best for the patient.
In the case of severely broken, cracked, or decaying teeth, sometimes an extraction is the only remaining choice. These are extreme situations in which a crown cannot be placed due to extensive damage, or if the cost and possibility of success of an attempted repair are too high and unlikely to succeed.
In the event that a root canal cannot be performed and a patient is suffering from severe pain, then an extraction is often a viable alternative. Though in most cases, a root canal is a very possible option, there are times where extenuating circumstances interfere with the operation and it becomes best for the patient to have the tooth extracted.
In the event of overcrowding or in preparation of orthodontic work, extractions might also be needed. If a tooth is oddly positioned and causing pain, removing a tooth can relieve some of the pressure and allow for some of the other teeth to realign to decrease irritation. This same principle is incorporated in preparation for orthodontic work. If a patients jaw needs space to be properly aligned, a tooth extraction can be a possible solution to allow space for the other teeth to become properly aligned with orthodontic guidance.
