Dental Sealants Save Smiles
Teeth that have deep pits or grooves provide food and bacteria with places to hide, resulting in a greater vulnerability to decay. Molars are also vulnerable because they’re hard to reach, especially for children who are just learning to brush or who have poor brushing habits.
Thankfully, all patients can enjoy extra protection from cavities with dental sealants. This preventive dental service, recognized by the American Dental Association, provides special protection for the chewing surfaces of teeth and for molars.
Dental sealants are applied to teeth in a liquid form and then are hardened to form an impenetrable barrier between teeth and bacteria. Once in place, sealants can last for as long as 10 years.
Dental Sealant Procedure
During your visit, our experienced family dentist will identify any vulnerable spots and prepare the tooth with a special cleaning and etching solution. After a few seconds, we will thoroughly rinse the tooth, dry it, and coat it with the sealant. Depending on how many teeth we’re treating, the process can take from 10 to 45 minutes. Most insurance companies will provide some coverage for dental sealants, as many recognize the value of it as a preventive measure.
