Detect Cancer Early with Oral Cancer Screenings
At Distinguished Dental, Dr. McIntosh believes strongly in the importance of oral cancer screenings during preventive dental exams. Diagnosing and treating oral cancer in its earliest stages of development is vital. Every year, this serious condition claims more lives than cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, testicular cancer, and skin cancer.
Most cases of oral cancer are related to risk factors like tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, habitual cheek or lip biting, or poorly fitting dentures. However, a rising number of cases are in patients with none of the traditional risk factors.
During you Dental Screening
During your exam, Dr. Sherri McIntosh will thoroughly examine your mouth, searching for anything that looks like a small white or red spot, or a small sore. Signs of oral cancer may include:
- A sore that doesn’t heal or that bleeds easily
- A change in the color of your oral tissue
- A sensation of pain, numbness, or tenderness in the mouth or on your lips
A full head and neck exam will help Dr. McIntosh identify signs of oral cancer so that a personalized treatment plan can be created. Because oral cancer is an urgent matter, you should notify us of any changes to your smile as soon as possible. Achieving a full recovery depends on an early diagnosis and treatment.
