What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a very versatile type of dental restoration that can be used in a variety of situations. It is a special cap that completely covers a tooth, thereby restoring its shape as well as its appearance and its ability to function properly. The dental crowns we provide are made out of porcelain, which gives them a very natural look and makes them highly durable.

You may be eligible for a dental crown if:

  • You have a tooth that has been badly damaged in some way.
  • You have a weakened tooth that is in danger of breaking.
  • You have recently had root canal treatment performed.
  • You are replacing a single tooth with a dental implant.

The Dental Crown Process

The traditional method of getting a dental crown requires two appointments. During the first visit, some enamel is removed from the tooth before the necessary impressions are taken. Said impressions are sent to a dental lab, which is where the dental crown is made. Once the crown is ready, it is sent back to the dentist’s office. A second appointment is then scheduled so that the completed crown can be placed.

If you don’t want to have to wait for your restoration, our practice is proud to offer CEREC same-day dental crowns! The CEREC system can capture scans of your mouth, then use those scans to create a three-dimensional image of your tooth in order to determine the right size and shape for your restoration. Then our in-office milling machine can create a high-quality crown for you, which can be placed on your tooth during the same visit. Generally speaking, the entire process can be completed in about an hour!
